Oral Hygiene

Brushing and flossing not only keeps your teeth and gums healthy, it also is good for your overall health. Studies have shown that if you are not brushing and flossing every day, the bacteria left in your mouth can enter your blood stream and travel to your heart which can lead to heart disease or other health problems. At our office, Homer Dental Centre, we will teach you how to brush and floss properly to achieve a healthy mouth. Your health is important to us!

Smoking and Oral Health

-Smoking leads to dental problems, including bad breath, tooth discoloration, increased plaque build up on the teeth, and an increased risk of developing gum disease, which leads to tooth loss. Smoking also delays the healing process following tooth extraction and increases the risk of developing oral cancer. It's never too late to quit smoking. Regardless of how long you have used tobacco products, quitting now can greatly reduce serious risks to your health.

Why do baby teeth need to be fixed. They'll just fall out anyways."

Though the baby teeth will fall out, some will stay in your child's mouth until age 12. Decayed teeth should be filled to prevent the decay from spreading deep into the pulp, which can cause pain and infection, and can hurt your child's health. Extracted baby teeth may need a spacer to hold the space for the permanent tooth to come in.

A child's first dental exam should be 6 months after the first teeth erupt or by age 1, as recommended by the Canadian Dental Association, and then an exam every six months so that problems can be detected early. This also allows you to find out if the cleaning you are doing at home is effective and the child also learns that going to the dentist helps prevent problems.

GUM DISEASE

Gum disease is on the most common dental problems faced by adults. Gums and underlying bones hold teeth firmly in place.
Gum disease affects the attachment between gums teeth.
Gum disease often develops slowly and without pain. some patients may not notice any signs until the disease is serious and poses a risk of tooth loss.
The Good news is:
  • gum disease can almost allways be prevented
  • if it starts, it can be treated
  • it can even be reversed in early stages.
So make an appointment at our yaletown dentitry office, Homer Dental Center, to maintain good oral health.

When do I need to start brush my child's tooth?

Homer Dental Centre tips for Parents.
You should brush your child's teeth as soon as their 1st tooth appears!
Use a soft baby size toothbrush twice a day and a small "rice" size portion of fluoride toothpaste.
Your child's 1st visit to the Dentist should be by their 1st birthday or when their 1st tooth appears!
Children deserve the right to have healthy dental care and it starts with you!
